Coming up with a theme for a birthday party is a fun process! There’s the googling of “birthday party themes” that most people would first do before beginning anything else. And then there’s the sifting through of hundreds of party theme ideas that the internet as regurgitated for them. Some may even come up with their very own themes based on their hobbies, favourite films or books and then take inspiration from the world wide web! In this article, we share with you some classic birthday theme ideas that your guests won’t soon forget.
Hollywood Movie Premiere
This would be a black and white theme inspired by clapperboards – the age-old device (with some modifications throughout the years) that has been used in filmmaking since time immemorial. Simply using black and white may appear a little too drab so you could use red table runners to decorate your dessert table to add a pop of colour to the set up and accent the whole B&W theme with gold star-shaped foil balloons. You could even have a popcorn stand at your party because what’s a movie without popcorn, right? Your guests could be informed to dress to the nines or you could even jazz it up a little by asking them to come dressed up as their favourite movie characters! Maybe organise a costume contest with free movie tickets as prizes to encourage any reluctant guests to attend your party in costumes! Another thing you could do is to rent a projector and screen some blockbusters in the background so that when conversation topics have run dry, you and your guests could all sit together for a movie.
Whimsical Wonderland/Mad Hatter Tea Party
This would come off as more fantastical and whimsical when it’s held in a garden! But with Singapore’s humid and unpredictable weather, it might not be the best idea to hold a birthday party outdoors. But if you’ve got a large budget, you may consider booking a sheltered space situated outdoors! One such venue in Singapore is Masons at Gillman Barracks. Surrounded by lush greenery and away from the hustle and bustle of the city, you and your guests will be whisked away to a magical garden party quite like the one in Alice in Wonderland! Decorate your space with garlands of flowers, confetti balloons in a myriad of colours, playing cards and some eccentric timepieces. The key to pulling off this decor is to make any and every surface cluttered with random objects (ie. weird hats, random teapots etc.) from the movie/book! Get creative by labelling your desserts with “Eat Me” which is so quintessential Alice in Wonderland.
Decade Themed
Be it the glitz and glamour of a 1920s-themed birthday party (think The Great Gatsby) or one that is full of loud colours and over-the-top fashion that’s so unique to the 1980s, a decade themed birthday party is one for the ages. Combine vintage elements and play some nostalgic songs over the speakers for a major throwback.
Carnival
A Carnival themed birthday party would be perfect for both kids and fun-loving adults! Deck out your space with red and white to resemble the stripes of a circus tent and contrast it with royal blue. Laden your food tables with heaps of delicious treats that can usually be found at amusement parks such as corndogs, cotton candy, churros and more! You could even have an ice cream sundae bar with a medley of toppings like rainbow sprinkles, nuts, oreos and marshmallows that guests could add to their sundaes. Decorate your space with balloons in the pastel shades of cotton candy or the eyecatching reds and blues of a circus! And if clowns are your thing, why not?
Galaxy
Galaxy themed everything was all the rage a few years ago but has since died down a little. From galaxy decorated accessories to galaxy inspired nail art, this particular theme sure was everywhere for a time. However, as overused as this concept was, elements from it could still be used to recreate something that only very loosely resembles a galaxy theme. Something more tasteful and less in-your-face; something for both children and adults alike. Have a starry night sky backdrop with hanging fairy lights at the photobooth or better yet, make a backdrop of the night sky with a wall of chrome balloons. Desserts are a must at parties — preorder a customisable mirror glaze galaxy cake that will surely be the centrepiece of your table set up! Cake pops studded with gold fondant shaped like stars and colour changing galaxy cocktails would also make for lovely additions to the dessert table.
Birthday party themes and trends change with the times yet these are some of the classics that will never get old. What are some unique and unforgettable birthday parties you’ve ever attended?
